Building permits are required for all new construction as well as most additions, alterations, and renovations to existing structures. Five to Seven business days are required to process a building permit.

Residential Building Permit Application
* If you are obtaining a building permit, please note that any electrical, plumbing, hvac, or low voltage work will require a separate permit. These permits should be obtained by the individual or contractor who will be responsible for performing the trade work. The state card hold must sign the application and their current state card and business license must be verified.
A City inspector will perform residential inspections as well as inspections of commercial buildings. Other types of inspections performed by the City are:

- • Development inspections
- • Erosion inspections
- • Paving inspections
- • Pool inspections
- • Site inspections
Building inspections shall take place within two business days after being scheduled.
Commercial Building Inspections
Commercial buildings must also be approved by the Barrow or Gwinnett County Fire Marshal. In addition, food-service businesses must contact the Barrow or Gwinnett County Health Department.
